Emma’s arms rotated, each stroke moving in a steady rhythm. Her hips rolled with every kick, thrusting across the pool. Belonging to an elite health club was one of the perks included with her salary at Carter Benson & Associates, but it would only be a few weeks before she’d be uncomfortably turned away at the front desk. All the more reason to get in as many workouts and massages as possible. She and Grant liked to hit the pool late in the evening, when the wealthy members had more interesting things to do than workout.

She stopped at the end of the lane, out of breath but restless. The ice water in her sports bottle did little to soothe her frustration. In the lane next to her, a man sliced his path with a fervor she envied. It was less biting than her slaps against the surface, and carnal in power. She watched his graceful turn and let more water slide down her throat. His breaths taken every other stroke were concise, hitting the same mark with perfection. If she didn’t know Grant’s body so well she would have thought it was him. But it wasn’t, and her curiosity grew the closer he came because no one swam here at eight o’clock. He didn’t turn again. He stopped. Emma lowered her goggles, hoping they hid her gawking. She strained to see left, but there was no way to make it look casual. He was watching her.

“Hi,” she said politely then stretched her arms into the air. “You have a nice stroke.”

When he said nothing, she regretted opening her mouth. Then his raspy voice filled the room. “I can’t tell you how sorry I am that you’re leaving CBA.”

Emma turned, but it was impossible to decipher if she knew the man under the skullcap and goggles. Until he smirked. The unmistakable dimple in his right cheek sat a little high, like he’d been scarred as a kid. It matched the cleft chin, which was prominent when freshly shaven but now hidden by a light beard that flung droplets when he moved.

Stanley Walsh raised his goggles and reached for her under the water. The Nurture Grove CEO always took familiarity with her as if she were a former lover. Nothing had ever given him that entitlement, yet he flaunted it like true circumstance. He let his hand glide down her back when they walked and caress her arm in elevators. It was never more than she could handle, but the effort to avoid further advances was draining. There was no one on earth she wanted to be alone with less than this man. Emma stepped back against the lane divider, moving out of casual reach.

“Your boss told me you needed to leave the firm abruptly, but when I pressed him more...” He pushed the divider until it swayed into her lane. “I understand you think you found an email that may have been deleted from our main server.”

Emma hid behind her foggy lenses, wishing she could sink without drowning.
